About Sandy Cadiz-Smith
Hello everyone, I’m Sandy.
I’m a freelance writer, editor and blogger who loves travelling, eating out and cooking. My blog eatingcoventgarden.com follows my food journey.
I grew up on a farm in Zimbabwe and moved to London 35 years ago. That’s when I learned I am a city girl at heart and where I also learned how to cook. I love the creative process of it, from concocting recipes to serving up delicious dishes. Although I’ve had my fair share of flops, too.
One thing I do miss about farm life is the myriad of fruit and veg we grew. Childhood memories include eating corn (or mealies as we called them) charred on the open fire, passion fruit (or granadilla as we called them) straight off the bush, giant watermelons just harvested and the freshest of mangoes in the bath (creates less mess). I do have a London garden and grow lots of fresh herbs and some fruit and vegetables. So that farm girl hasn’t completely disappeared.
I hate waste and try never to throw any food away. This means I’m often rooting through my fridge and making dinner from what’s in there. It’s lead to some interesting dishes.
I also like to cook seasonally. It’s fun to mark the year with what’s fresh locally, and I think everything tastes better too. I’m also inspired by my travels and cook a range of cuisines, my favourites being Spanish, Indian and South-East Asian. So you will see a lot of those influences in my recipes.
I met Fiona, my Frugal Flexitarian partner, on a press trip on a gulet sailing around Greece and Turkey. We are now good friends, bonded over our love of food and travel. So I’m delighted to be working on this exciting venture with her.
